An American Intervention:
A Call to Action
I have only the idea. This call to action is desperately seeking assistance by other advocates willing to passionately create a proposal that the united states government will not refuse. Lets all stand against criminalizing our relationships. I believe I speak for a good percentage of the American people by saying that we don't want police involved our divorces or family feuds. Imagined people that listen and believe you while you tell them about things they can't see or prove. They can believe you because there is no reason not to. No one is in trouble. If needed, they are separated for 24 hours and then mediation before anyone makes any decision about having law enforcement get involved.
I created a scenario to consider while I persuade you into the simple concept of "The Department of intervention".
One individual has a bit of a drinking problem. Another person lives in fear of the things the first individual says to them. They don't yell or swear; instead, one claims the other person isn't real and doesn't exist, insisting they are not allowed to leave the house. This excuse is used to justify their terrible treatment. The person living in fear has endured this false reality for two years, causing irreparable damage to their amygdala and hippocampus. They cannot remember how they felt before, but now they believe they are unworthy of love or happiness. The trauma to their brain has led to emotional dysregulation, resulting in regretful overreactions and validation of the times they were called crazy. One day, a neighbor heard them screaming and called law enforcement. When the police arrived, there was a mark on the face of the first individual, and they immediately treated the second person as the abuser. In disbelief, the second person turned to the officer arresting them and said as their only defense, " But they said I wasn't real."
The police assisted the first individual in obtaining a protective order, and the second person was held in county jail for a few days before being released onto the street with nothing, not allowed to return home. No one would ever find out that the first individual had childhood trauma that paralyzed them from being able to speak their true feelings when there was a possibility of seeing negative emotions.
The act of calling the police in a family dispute can sometimes be weaponized as a means of control or intimidation. When a woman calls the cops on a man, or vice versa, it can feel like a threat, especially if one party is on probation or has experienced trauma from past law enforcement encounters. This tactic turns a tool meant for protection into a lever of manipulation, exacerbating the situation instead of resolving it. The looming presence of law enforcement can escalate tensions, making it difficult for meaningful dialogue and resolution to occur.
In many cases, the severity of the police intervention can be the final straw that leads to a breakup. The emotional and psychological toll of involving law enforcement in intimate matters can be profound, leaving lasting scars and deepening rifts between partners. When mediation and support are replaced by handcuffs and charges, the path to reconciliation and healing becomes nearly impossible. This approach, intended to provide protection, can instead become the catalyst for permanent separation, highlighting the urgent need for a more compassionate and effective system.
Preventing misuse of authority is crucial. Involving law enforcement in family and medical decisions can lead to the misuse of power, where one party uses police intervention as a weapon against the other. This can exacerbate conflicts and result in unjust outcomes.
It's easy to find the number of lives helped by law enforcement, with numerous reports highlighting successful interventions and crime prevention. However, data on the lives negatively impacted by law enforcement is much harder to come by. I am just starting to research but the absence of comprehensive statistics on this issue leaves a significant gap in understanding the full scope of law enforcement's impact. If your life has been more negatively impacted by law enforcement than positively, text 40032. This call to action aims to shed light on the unseen consequences and advocate for systemic changes that prioritize healing and justice.
